Knife Ring
Part one of a two part series. This was a project where I wanted to play with masculine and feminine dynamics. Originally inspired by a ring in the Attack on Titan series. The rings plays with gender roles, and combine them. For the knife ring, it is made with a functional knife that comes out of the ring, but has the detail of a flower at the front. The malevolent aspect of the hidden knife in the ring represents masculine undertones, while the flower on the opposite side of the ring depicts femininity. Made from the same material but worn with different intentions.
Class Ring
The class ring. Part two of a two part series. Like stated before, for this project I was playing with feminine and masculine dynamics. For the more masculine appearing ring, my inspiration came from rings associated with men, or rings that men are more likely seen wearing. I thought of biker style rings, big and heavy looking. The kind of ring a wealthy athlete would wear. I then landed on the class ring style, since it had many of the characteristics I was looking for. For the feminine attribute, I decided to cast this ring with a lava rock bead set in the center. Lava rock is known for being associated with fertility, representing rebirth or renewal. They are also used in jewelry as a diffuser for essential oils, because of their absorbent properties. For my ring, I decided to put nice, feminine oils into the stone, scents like rose, lavender, and jasmine. A big, masculine ring, that smells like flowers. Lastly, since I was graduating soon during the creation of this ring, I decided to turn it into my own class ring, carving my initials and the year into the opposite sides, and I wore it during my graduation ceremony.
The Circle Ring
The circle ring. This ring was my first attempt at a band ring, and I love the way it turned out. Nonetheless, I felt the need to put it into my portfolio. This ring was designed to have a looping double circle design around the sides, infinitely looping into itself. I love the concept of infinite loops, a concept that comes up in many of my designs, and this ring was one of the first instances where that interest was turned into a piece.
Necklaces
The Infinity Necklace
The infinity necklace. This was the first piece I made during the pandemic. Lock downs were happening, my classes where going online. Everything was changing, and as a result the music I was listening to started to shift, and in particular there was one song that I listened to frequently. The song titled “The Night We Met” by Lord Huron, was the inspiration for this piece. The calm sadness this song portrays, the looping nature of going back, starting over, less and less as time goes on. The imagery this song laid out felt like infinity. Two people looping around each other, breaking off, coming back. For my piece, I decided to stick with this idea of infinity, the looping nature. I crafted infinity signs, and looped them around each other, going around the back, and then falling apart, which is shown on the front by the two drooping infinities. Nonetheless, they are still connected by the chain in the front, destined to come back together.
The Stone Pendant
The stone pendant. During the creative process of designing this piece I bought 3 stones, and I decided to use this one for this piece. The stone is a polished dinosaur fossil, with this in mind, I wanted to design an antique looking pendant, something that would be given before going on a magical quest.
Wearables
For this category, I will be discussing other wearable pieces I’ve made, starting with the cloud pins. The cloud pins were my first full attempt at making an etched piece. I wanted to have two of them, so I etched one cloud on copper, and one on brass, polished them, and added the chain to the bigger copper one to simulate rain falling. The second wearable are the earrings. I made these after taking my first metals class. My mom loves jewelry, and I wanted to make something for her as a thank you, for the support she gives me. The earrings are designed with her in mind, light in weight, on the chunkier side, and made out of brass, since she loves gold jewelry.
